 SERVICE TO MANKIND

Sertoma's mission is to improve the quality of life today for those at risk or impacted by hearing loss through education and support. Sertoma's vision is to create communities of change under common leadership and with a common voice that will serve the many in need. ... For those who cannot hear, there is Sertoma. Our mission and our passion is to improve the quality of life for those at risk or impacted by hearing loss through education and support. Local clubs can also choose to support other community needs in their vicinity. Since 1912, volunteers known as Sertomans serve communities across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

THE SERTOMA CLUB OF SPRINGFIELD ILLINOIS has been serving our community since 1954. Our current membership is about 40 men and women. Our local club helps the community in many ways:

**We support activities that help people of all ages with a hearing loss. Low-income can apply for help through our Sertoma Hearing Aid Request Program (SHARP)

**We award scholarships for upper level college students in the fields of audiology, speech pathology, and the education of the hearing impaired.

**We have provided technology to our local school district to help hearing-impaired students succeed in the classroom.

**We have purchased equipment for Lincoln Library, the Hoogland Center for the Arts, the Legacy Theatre, Springfield Muni Opera, and the Old State Capitol so that the hearing impaired can enjoy the programs and presentations.

**We support the Sertoma (National) Annual Fund, which provides college scholarships for hearing impaired students and those studying audiology.

**We have supported the Boys and Girls Club of Central Illinois for over 60 years, providing support for their summer day camp, Camp Sertoma, at Lake Springfield and for recent renovations of their main facility.

**Because of our location in Abraham Lincoln's home town, we have been involved in many national heritage activities. Volunteers assist at the naturalization of new citizens and provide national heritage documents to them, several times a year at the Old State Capitol.

**We support other youth activities including the Golden Laurel Awards, which honor outstanding high school seniors from our six high schools.

**We are very proud of our Sister Sertoma Club in San Pedro de las Colonias, Coahuila, Mexico. Members from both cities have participated in many exchange visits and projects.

**We also support other community organizations such as the Salvation Army, Mini O'Beirne Crisis Nursery, Sojourn Shelter, Central Illinois Food Bank, and various local food pantries, in an effort to improve the quality of life in the Springfield area. During our fiscal year 2021 we disbursed over $5000.00 to over 12 community organizations.
